Dodecanese


Karpathos
the most traditional of the Greek islands, Karpathos even has its own distinct language. in the north of the island(Mainly in Olympos), things have remained the same as they were a long time ago including traditional bread baking and dress. the south of the island holds their main village and an airport.

Astypalea
also known as the Butterfly island due to its shape, Astypalea is very recognizable due to its venetian castle set atop it's mane village. they have even converted their windmills into a library and tourist info center. the island is known for it's local cuisine, particularly a dish called poungia. which are honey filled pastries.

Kastellorizo
Kastellorizo is one of the most distant Greek islands. it rests less than 2km from Turkey. the island is known for it's charming little houses and even has an airport despite its small size. in fact, there used to be two flights a day from Paris. Kastellorizo's main attraction are it's blue caves.

Kalymnos
Kalymnos is the sponge fishing capital of Greece. sponges are a big part of its economy. now days though, most people travel here to experience some amazing rock climbing. the island is very mountainous which makes it perfect for the sport. Kalymnos also has many special festivals, especially during Greek easter.

Rhodes
Rhodes is the most popular island in the Dodecanese. it draws a lot of visitors every year. Some of the main attractions are the beach and acropolis of Lindos, and Rhodes' old town. the island used to be home to the colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the world before it collapsed. Rhodes is also know for its amazing cuisine.

Symi
Symi is mainly known for boat building and, like Kalymnos, sponge fishing. Symi is instantly recognizable due to its pastel colored houses that greet you in the port. Symi is also known for its massive easter festival. despite being relatively known, the island maintains its peace and quiet. it's also known for it's small red shrimps that are delicious.

Leros
Leros has an amazing history. from being a leper colony to being a battle ground during ww2 in Greece, this Island has a lot to share. Leros is a popular diving spot among tourists looking for a good swim spot. it also produces its own local cuisine known as koukouvades. a type of pastry. leros also holds many festivals too such as the Leros wine festival.

Kos
Kos is one of the most historic islands in all of Greece, being the workplace of the famous doctor Hippocrates. Kos also boasts many ancient sites such as the byzantine fortress in its port. the island is also very green with lots of nature and has many nice beaches. Kos really is an incredible island with so much to discover.

Nisyros
the Santorini of the Dodecanese, Nisyros is the top of a volcano that pokes out from the sea. the volcano is still active and last erupted in 1888. because it's volcanic, the island also boasts thermal springs. Nisyros has been declared a very peacful and authentic island with a charming main village known as Mandraki.
